A Lullaby

. . . Witchdoctors praying for a mighty showdown; no way our holy flag is going to fall. Up here we sacrifice our children to feed them worn out-dreams of yesterday, and teach them that dying will lead us into glory. . .

A few days ago, I wondered aloud about how things might have turned out for the Palestinians these past few years had there been a real "anti-war" movement abroad in the rich countries of the west, rather than what that movement has become.

Jimmy Bradshaw, wondering the same, explores the question in some depth.

Yes, I've just read about it in the Hebrew press.

Here is a thought:

"Israel's death toll in the 2-week-old offensive stands at 13, including three civilians and a soldier killed by rocket fire into Israel. Four of the soldiers were killed by "friendly fire."

Of the nine soldiers killed in battle, four, that's nearly 50% of the death toll, were killed by "friendly fire." This fact alone should demonstrate the risks and difficulties faced by the IDF when it fights a terrorist militia, sometime in uniform, sometime in civilian clothing, deeply embedded and operating from among the civilian Population. I don't suppose it would occur to Buber to suggest that these soldiers were deliberately targeted by the IDF, would it? So why were they killed?

I'd like to ask him, too, what he thinks could be the motivation of an Israeli tank to fire at a residential building? Were they playing with fire? Were they target practicing? Were they following orders to shoot at random and hit anything that's moving by way of making war?

All Palestinians need to do is stop firing at Israeli civilians, stop targeting Israeli civilians, stop wanting and acting to kill as many Jewish Israelis as they can, and they won't have to suffer even one more death caused by an Israeli bullet. It is as simple, and as easy, as that.

I would suspect that many of those killed or injured have never lifted a finger against Israel. Certainly most of those in Gaza are not firing these miserable little rockets into Israel. So then why say "All Palestinians need to do..."?

Maybe a more realistic statement might be "All that the rocket-firing Palestinians need to do...".
