In Favour

VANCOUVER, B.C. — An ancient hollow tree in Stanley Park has been spared from the chainsaw. Newly-elected members of the Vancouver Park Board have approved a plan to realign and straighten the tree after it was damaged by wind storms in 2006.

Previous park board members had voted to fell what remained of the massive hollow stump, but the current board has accepted a plan to jack the red cedar back to its original vertical position and stabilize it with internal steel braces.

I dunno, man. It's kind of a pile of rotting wood. When it starts getting propped up with a metal framework, maybe it's time to let it go with some dignity.

It is a reminder of a bygone era.
And I'm a sentimental fool.

Kudos to Bruce Macdonald, et al:

It's transformed into a curious piece of techno-pagan architecture, and I'm all for it provided they agree to let it's bare metal bones remain standing when its gone. It's empty braces, tracing a tree that is gone, will create the powerful impression that the tree escaped.

I'm with anonymous on this one. Sort of a lingering performance art installation, yep, that's it.

On second thought that old tree trunk is probably cheaper than most other public art, and certainly more interesting to look at, than say that Henry Moore abomination in Hampstead Heath or that incredibly ugly upside down church thingy that sat in a Vancouver parkland for a time. Put me down as in favour of saving the Stanley Stump, just as long as we're allowed to crack a joke about the hollow (hallowed) cedar.

Yikes! Bleat loudly enough about something's "significance to the community", and the fuzzy headed will smile and tyhrow piles of cash at it. What a waste of time, effort and money. IT'S A DEAD TREE PEOPLE! This makes me embarrassed to be a Native Vancouverite, as it only re-affirms the impression that this is La La Land.
